Surgical reduction of male breast tissue is actually a very common plastic surgery among men of all ages and ethnicities. Male breast reduction surgery can help with your self-confidence and enable you to participate in activities you may avoid now due to embarrassment. Your more masculine and well proportioned chest will be a long-lasting result as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Medically “speaking” gynecomastia is the enlargement or over-development of male breasts. There are many causes that result in the over-development of the male chest including but not limited to: hormone changes, heredity, certain prescription medications, marijuana, anabolic steroids, and excessive alcohol use. Being overweight can also lead to enlarged breasts, but true gynecomastia is a combination of excess fat and glandular tissues (hard lumps felt most commonly beneath the nipples).
Male Breast Reduction Surgical Techniques
Gynecomastia/ male chest contouring can be achieved through various plastic surgery techniques (the type of plastic surgery will depend on your specific case) liposuction, breast biopsy, skin resection, or a combination of these. It is not a woman’s breast reduction surgery and the technique is completely different.
Depending on the amount and location of breast fat / and breast tissue being removed, you may have incisions along the bottom of your areola, or horizontal incisions along the bottom of your breasts. Your scars will take about a year to mature and fade to becoming close to imperceptible. The areolar scar will blend in very well and are not noticeable after a few months. Liposuction scars are actually very small and heal incredibly quickly.
Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery Plan
Gynecomastia / male breast reduction plastic surgery is an outpatient surgery performed under general anesthesia. You will need to have someone drive you to the Troy or Novi plastic surgery center for your procedure and to pick you up. Ideally someone should stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery. You may experience some pain and bruising from the liposuction procedure and you will be prescribed pain killers to take (if needed). Your recovery time will depend on which type of surgery you elected for your ideal results (this varies from case to case). You will have lifting restrictions for a few weeks depending on your recovery.
