While full breasts might look beautiful on women, many men feel frustrated and embarrassed when it happens to them. Gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia are the two most common causes of this issue.
While they appear similarly, the two conditions have different underlying causes. Determining what you have is one of the first steps in finding the right treatment.
At Gowda MD & Associates, board-certified and fellowship-trained plastic surgeon Mune Gowda, MD, is frequently called a “best in class” expert. Dr. Gowda has highly specialized expertise in the surgical treatment of gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia.
Each may require a different approach. Read on to learn how you can achieve a flatter, more masculine chest through advanced surgery.
Understanding Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia usually occurs due to hormone imbalances, particularly fluctuating testosterone and estrogen levels. These imbalances can cause excessive glandular tissue development within the breasts. Men with gynecomastia often notice that the breast tissue under their nipples feels firm and rubbery. Gynecomastia may affect both breasts or just one.
Surgery For Gynecomastia
Because glandular tissue isn’t fat, it doesn’t respond to weight loss. With gynecomastia surgery, Dr. Gowda removes the glandular tissue and extra skin, then tightens the skin to create a flatter, more masculine chest contour.
He often adds liposuction to the procedure to eliminate stray fat and create a comprehensive, sculpted result. However, liposuction alone doesn’t adequately address gynecomastia because it targets fat, not glandular tissue.
Understanding Pseudogynecomastia
Pseudogynecomastia develops when excess fat builds up in the chest region. This condition often develops in men with higher body fat percentages but can also affect those with normal weight due to genetic predisposition.
Men with pseudogynecomastia have overdeveloped male breasts that may look like those of gynecomastia, but they don’t have excess glandular tissue as men with gynecomastia do. If you have pseudogynecomastia, you may notice that the tissue under your nipple feels soft and squishy.
Surgery for Pseudogynecomastia
Because pseudogynecomastia is caused by fat, the best treatment option is often liposuction. With liposuction, Dr. Gowda creates very small incisions and uses a thin cannula to suction fat deposits out. He repositions the skin afterward, and your skin retracts to create a smoother, firmer look.
Liposuction may be perfect for your pseudogynecomastia if you have good skin elasticity. But if you have a lot of extra skin, you may need skin excision surgery, too.
